613-acre George and Julia Brumley Family Nature Preserve in Orange County protects Raleigh’s water supply
Durham, NC (April 25, 2017) – More than 1,300 people enjoyed running, mountain biking and hiking on 15 miles of trails at Triangle Land Conservancy’s grand opening of the 613-acre George and Julia Brumley Family Nature Preserve on Earth Day: April 22nd, 2017. Children enjoyed outdoor activities and there was also drumming, mountain bike skills classes, and food trucks including Fullsteam’s Brumley Forest Baltic Porter and Maple View Farm (where TLC holds a conservation easement).
Almost 100 people attended a ribbon cutting held one day earlier, with remarks by Reid Wilson, Chief Deputy Secretary, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Ed Buchan, City of Raleigh, and Penny Rich, Orange County Commissioner along with TLC’s Executive Director Sandy Sweitzer, current Board Chair Russell Killen and previous Board Chair, Ron Strom.
The Brumley Preserve is located just a few miles from downtown Durham and Chapel Hill in western Orange County, approximately 2 miles southeast of Hillsborough. The Brumley Preserve was designed as a model for sustainable land management practices. The trails on the land were built with the help of hundreds of volunteers to complement the contours of the land, reduce run off, and connect people with the best natural elements that this property has to offer. The preserve offers a mix of hiking-only and mixed-use (mountain biking and hiking) trails. The preserve will be open to the public every day from dawn until dusk.
