The following blog post was written in August 2017 by Veronika Payne, an intern at Triangle Land Conservancy through Partners for Youth Opportunity. This summer I had the opportunity to do my internship with Triangle Land Conservancy through a program I am a part of called Partners for Youth Opportunity. During my internship with TLC I have had the pleasure of helping out with some of their environmental education programming. TLC not only conserves land, but uses it to promote environmental education. While being involved with TLC efforts to educate youth I took part in classroom art projects, as well as a few field trips to one of TLC’s nature preserves. Brumley is TLC’s newest public nature preserve, it made a major contribution to how the kids got connected to nature.

East Durham Children’s Initiative and Durham Public Schools got to take part in the beauty of Brumley in July. While at Brumley the East Durham Children’s Initiative learned about pollinators, milkweed and butterflies. We even were able to take part in a scavenger hunt. After the scavenger hunt the children learned how to make bird feeders.

During the Durham Public Schools field trip they got to learn about predator v. prey relationships in nature through a game called hawks v. squirrels. This game involved the kids getting into groups and catching their prey. Being able to see the fun the children had on each of these trips inspired me to get outside more. My overall experience at TLC has taught me exactly how much hard work and care goes into conserving land. I have gotten to be a part of and learn so many new things during my internship. I feel having had this experience has helped me become more mindful of my surroundings. I also have learned firsthand that everything has its own unique purpose. I am very grateful for the time I have been allowed to spend with TLC.
