We Are TLC: Introducing New Associate Director of Philanthropy

September 11, 2025

“I love conservation, and I think the work Triangle Land Conservancy is doing is incredible,” shared TLC’s newest hire, Sandra Rodriguez, Associate Director of Philanthropy

Having worked for nonprofits her entire career, Sandra is no stranger to the world of fundraising. After studying Communications at the University of Costa Rica, she spent a few months in advertising before quickly transitioning to nonprofit fundraising. It wasn’t until she joined Fundación Neotrópica, a Costa Rican nonprofit that focused on protecting natural resources and biodiversity, that she discovered her passion for combining conservation and philanthropy. With the support of a Fulbright Scholarship, Sandra pursued a master’s degree in environmental science at Washington State University.

Since then, she has gained experience in grantmaking, fundraising, communications, and program management across several organizations. During her time at Triangle Community Foundation, Sandra spent almost a decade advising donors and connecting them with nonprofits that aligned with their values.

“Giving can be very transactional,” she explained. “But it can also be very deeply connected to the things that are most important to you.”

When the position at TLC became available, Sandra knew it was the perfect fit.  Since moving to North Carolina in 1998, she has been a frequent visitor to TLC preserves and enjoys spending time outdoors with her family. In her role, Sandra manages the Philanthropy team, supporting their individual efforts, engaging directly with donors, leading fundraising initiatives, and strengthening day-to-day operations. She focuses on building strong systems and equipping her team with the tools they need to raise funds effectively.

“I really need to believe in the work,” she began. “I don’t think I could fundraise for an organization I didn’t believe in.”

Her passion for conservation stems from a personal appreciation for the outdoors. She describes being in nature as a spiritual experience, naming Johnston Mill as one of her favorite spots to enjoy a walk outside.

“I have seen how being in nature and being outside just rejuvenates people,” she reflected. “It brings you strength.”

As she has been getting to know the TLC community, Sandra has been struck by the dedication of its supporters.

“Donors to TLC care deeply about the region and its health,” she said with a smile. “They understand how vital these open natural spaces are for the future of the region.”

Looking ahead, Sandra is excited to participate in her first Giving Tuesday campaign with TLC this fall, while fostering new relationships and supporting her team. Outside of work, Sandra loves to sew and spend time with her family.

Join us in welcoming Sandra to the TLC community! Together, with Sandra’s leadership and your continued support, we can protect the natural spaces that make our region so special.
