On Monday, March 21, 2017, TLC received several awards at the Chatham County Commissioners meeting from Grand Trees of Chatham. Grand Trees of Chatham is a volunteer organization with the mission to increase public understanding and appreciation of Chatham County's valuable and irreplaceable trees through an awards program and a public education program. TLC received recognition for White Pines Nature Preserve for the Landmark Trees on the property, including two trees that received individual Champion Tree awards, a honey locust and an American hornbeam. While none of the eponymous white pine trees on the property were big enough to receive the Champion Tree designation (they grow them big in the mountains), several other species just missed out. TLC is also planning to expand the trail system at White Pines and add a canoe launch as part of our work in Chatham County. The trail network will expand by approximately 3.5 miles and take visitors through previously unexplored areas of the preserve. Once complete, White Pines will offer a little less than 7 miles of trail, a canoe launch, and an expanded parking lot. TLC hopes to attract more visitors to this ecological treasure just outside the Triangle, and with new trails exploring new areas, there could be more Grand Trees waiting to be discovered.
