Big Woods Hike
Big Woods Hike
November 1 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am
Free
Join TLC to explore a special Chatham County preserve!
This will be the first public hike at Big Woods Nature Preserve, the second-largest single purchase by TLC in Chatham county. This preserve, which is not open to the public, is also TLC's first acquisition of land directly bordering Jordan Lake's protected land in a decade.
Nick Adams, TLC's Senior Land Manager West, and TLC Trail Guide, Steve Gartrell, will talk about the ecology of Big Woods and TLC's journey to acquiring the property. Due to the lack of developed trails, this hike requires traversing on uneven ground, steep inclines, and over a small stream crossing. Big Woods has a fairly open understory and rugged topography that hosts mature oak-hickory forests, mixed mesic forests, and a rich floodplain along Bush Creek. This hike will be approximately 2 miles, with about 260 feet of elevation gain. This is a free event, but preregistration is required. Since this is a private property, the exact location will be sent via email after registration.

Inclement Weather Policy: In the event of inclement weather, you will be contacted by email for a call on cancellation or postponement. At our Williamson and Brumley South Nature Preserves, due to the multi-use trail systems, we close the trails to the public if there has been rain to try and prevent erosion and detrimental impact. Please note that this event falls under this category and will be cancelled if the trails are closed.
