What is your role at TLC? As Land Stewardship Manager East I oversee management of TLC’s owned properties and preserves in Wake and Johnston Counties. Working the the Land Steward Associate East and Williamson Farm Coordinator, our work spans a diversity of activities such as trail management, habitat improvement projects, and promoting local regenerative agriculture.
Favorite TLC Preserve? My favorite preserve is the Flower Hill Nature Preserve in northeastern Johnston County. While it only has about 1 mile of trail, its unique microhabitat supports an ecosystem reminiscent of the mountains of western North Carolina. Passing rhododendron and galax along the steep, rocky bluff reminds me of hiking along the Appalachian Trail.
Patrick joined TLC as the Land Stewardship Manager (East) in July 2021. His passion for forestry and land management grew from his time spent in the woods around his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western NC. After graduating from UNC, he spent 3 years in the Peruvian Andes serving with the US Peace Corps, working with indigenous communities. He then received his M.S. in forestry from Penn State, studying agroforestry and sustainable forest resource management. He has worked in a variety of stewardship capacities from prairie management in Ohio to arboriculture in Virginia. Before joining the TLC team, he was a forest ranger and wildland firefighter with the North Carolina Forest Service.
