So you want to go on a hike do you? Hiking can be a lot of fun, a great way to connect to nature, and it has been shown to improve your physical and mental health. But before you hit the trail, you need to also make sure that you are prepared.
Below you will learn about the “10 Essentials” to bring along on any hike, the 7 principles of Leave No Trace, and why hiking is more than just fun. By completing this badge you will become a hiking expert! And on your next hike you can show your family exactly what to do. It is especially important right now to get outside rather than staying in to have group gatherings. With this information you can help plan your next family adventure! Complete ALL 3 activities to earn the badge.
Activity 1:
The 10 Essentials: Learn about what the basics of the “10 Essentials” are to add to your bag before you go on a hike. The REI website keeps a blog of tips for hikers and this article is one of them. These items can be adjusted depending on the type of hike you are going on, but some things never change, like your first aid kit, water, and snacks.
Activity 2:
The 7 Principles of Leave No Trace (LNT): Learn what the seven principles of Leave No Trace are through LNT’s PEAK online interactive games and then watch these videos to learn the seven hands signs for each of the principles to be able to remember when you’re on trail.
Activity 3:
Take a Hike!: Pick one of Triangle Land Conservancy’s 8 Public Preserves to visit (or if that isn’t possible then find a trail system nearby through your city or parks system.)
Follow the 7 principles of LNT and make your plan with your family. Where are you going? Which trail are you taking? How long will it be (distance) and how long should it take you (time)? Should you let someone know where you are going in case something happens?
Once you have your plan, pack your bag! Determine what you need (remember the 10 essentials) and try not to add too many extra things because that will only add unnecessary weight.
Last but not least, if you chose a TLC Preserve, have everyone that went with you enroll and log your hike in our Hiking Challenge!
