Do you want to be a scientist? Do you think bugs are cool? Come visit our Johnston Mill Nature Preserve and participate in the citizen science project Caterpillars Count! No prior knowledge is necessary and all ages are welcome.

We will meet at the Turkey Farm entrance to Johnston Mill and hike to the plot sites of tagged trees. There we will be joined by members of the Hurlbert Lab at UNC who will take us through every step of the project including being shown the methods of capturing accurate counts of arthropods on the branches of tagged trees. You do not need to bring anything, other than good walking shoes and a full water bottle. If you would like to read more on the project or view the virtual training video prior to heading out you can learn more here: https://caterpillarscount.unc.edu/getStarted/

This is a free volunteering event. Please make sure to register on our VolunteerHub website here.

Current Mask Policy: TLC seeks to build a supportive, mask-friendly environment in all collaborations with staff and the public. Please wear a mask if you are not vaccinated, or if that makes you feel most comfortable. We will have masks available if you would like to wear one during an event. We also encourage those eligible to be vaccinated to get their Covid-19 vaccine and booster shot. If you are experiencing any Covid-related symptoms, please stay home and attend a program another day. Our top priority is to create a safe environment for our community. Thank you for your understanding.
