img_3565 Inspired by our friends at REI, we want to help you opt outside every day! Celebrate with outdoor enthusiasts around the country by joining us for a walk at Horton Grove Nature Preserve on January 28th. Pete Schubert will lead this moderately paced hike that will cover approximately 3.2 miles with stops for interpretation of natural and historical elements that exist in this unique landscape.

Pete Schubert recently retired after a 32-year federal career as a Commissioned Officer, civil engineer, and project engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US EPA. Pete holds a BS in Earth and Planetary Sciences from MIT and pursued graduate work at UNC in Chapel Hill in geology. Pete is passionate about sustainability, is a LEED Accredited Professional under the US Green Building Council, and is a co-founder of the South Durham Farmers’ Market. A self-taught naturalist, he often leads wild flower, ecology, and geology hikes for the public in natural areas across NC. He is the Director of the Cullowhee Native Plant Conference and volunteers with several Triangle, NC, and Southeast nature-based non-profits and watershed protection organizations.

Come for your first introduction to Horton Grove Nature Preserve or to learn something new about one of your favorite places, with over 8 miles of trail there’s lots to explore at Horton Grove Nature Preserve on January 28th and every day!
