The sun was shining, yellow buttercups blanketed the fields, and pigs oinked happily as students from the East Durham Children’s Initiative fed them raw eggs as a treat. This idyllic setting for EDCI’s latest TLC-led educational field trip last Saturday was made possible by Ryan and Alicia of Green Button Farm, who generously agreed to host the young students. Throughout the morning, Ryan and Alicia showed us around their property, which is under permanent conservation easement with Triangle Land Conservancy. They taught everyone about sustainable agriculture and what it takes to humanely raise livestock. After visiting the pigs and exploring the cow pasture, we all ate lunch next to a tranquil pond before heading back to Durham. Voicing the feelings of many, one student said to me “I wish I could come back here every day,” I couldn’t help but agree!
