What is your role at TLC? In addition to overseeing the Conservation and Stewardship programs, I get to meet landowners and explore ways in which they can conserve the land they love.
Favorite TLC Preserve: Johnston Mill Nature Preserve for its birds and proximity. The preserve is less than 5 miles from my house and contains a variety of habitats for our feathered friends.
Bo started as Conservation Project Manager for TLC in October 2008 and currently holds the position of Director of Land Protection and Stewardship West. With deep roots in the local community, Bo has successfully identified, initiated, and closed scores of land projects. Bo represents TLC on the New Hope Creek Advisory Committee, a longtime TLC priority area, and has worked with many of the New Hope partners to protect a good portion of that corridor that drains into Jordan Lake.
Bo’s relationships with local staff and leaders have proved critical in advancing TLC’s work over the years. Bo grew up in Chapel Hill with a deep respect for the environment due in part to his family history; his father, Jonathan Howes, is a former TLC board chair and was Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources during the Hunt administration. Bo received degrees in political science and history from Denison University in Ohio. Later he earned his law degree at NC Central University. After a stint working for the North Carolina Industrial Commission, Bo spent a decade working in private practice before realizing a desire to return to his environmental roots.
He is a past president of the New Hope Audubon Society and is on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Botanical Garden Foundation.
