Vision

Through the Good Ground Initiative, Triangle Land Conservancy strives to turn organizational resources and power into equitable land distribution by empowering partners and investing resources in education and land access for historically underserved land seekers. We envision using our decades of experience and expertise to conserve high quality conservation land by:

  • Creating a network of conservation resources that open pathways for historically underserved communities to access knowledge, financing, and land
  • Investing conservation resources in helping land seekers become land stewards
  • Encouraging funders to join TLC in looking beyond land ownership being a pre-requisite for participation in the benefits of conservation
  • Providing equitable partnership opportunities for new and existing partnerships
  • Examining the human history of the land we conserve to inform our approach to their management and sovereignty

Community Collaboration

TLC works with community groups and leaders that are committed to diversifying the recipients of conservation benefits. Together, we offer comprehensive resources and education centered on conservation, land-based enterprises, equity, and more. TLC’s work with other organizations to develop these resources introduces some of the responsibilities of owning conserved land that must be proactively considered by those seeking it for agriculture, forestry, recreation, or other purposes. Designed to be a set of workshops for small cohorts, completion of the resources is required of all who are seriously considering purchasing land through the Good Ground Initiative. The workshop series will begin in January 2024. For more information, please contact the Good Ground Manager.

Conservation Tools

TLC’s GGI employs conservation tools like Buy-Protect-Sell (BPS), a conservation model in which land trusts buy and protect land with a conservation easement, an agreement that permanently protects land and decreases its total market value by restricting the option to develop. These restrictions then allow TLC to sell the land at a reduced value, while protecting the conservation benefits the land provides. Conserved properties are privately matched with and sold to GGI participants who have completed the GGI curriculum.
