The Brumley Preserve was designed as a model for sustainable land management practices and recreation. The 15 miles of trails were built with the help of hundreds of volunteers to complement the contours of the land, reduce run off, and connect people with the best natural elements that this property has to offer. The trails on the preserve will provide a mix of hiking-only and mixed-use (mountain biking and hiking) trails.
“The opening of this beautiful preserve to the public reflects years of work by hundreds of people and supporters of TLC, open space, and conservation.” said Sandy Sweitzer, Executive Director. “We are grateful to the many staff, volunteers, donors, and governmental partners who made this possible. Triangle Land Conservancy is thrilled to offer this wonderful resource to the community.”
The Brumley Preserve was acquired in 2010 and this Earth Day opening is the culmination of years of work. “Brumley Preserve supports three of Triangle Land Conservancy’s four public benefits: it safeguards clean water, protects natural habitats, and it will help connect our community with nature,” said TLC Board Chair and Parker Poe Partner Russell Killen. “I am proud that, over the past three decades, TLC has protected more than 18,000 acres for the benefit of generations to come. It’s especially rewarding to see our work continuing in the Triangle with the opening of a place as special as Brumley, which is within a 30 minute drive of almost a million residents.”
Triangle Land Conservancy extends gratitude to the many organizations and individuals who made significant contributions towards the 2010 purchase of the property including the Zeist Foundation, NC’s Clean Water Management Trust Fund, the Warner Foundation, City of Raleigh’s Clean Water Protection Program, Orange County, Nancy and Edwin Preston, and private donors to the Pearson Stewart Land Opportunity Fund established through TLC’s Our Water, Our Land campaign.
TLC is also very thankful for generosity displayed by community partners and all TLC members whose contributions have made possible the work to care for the property since purchase and prepare it for public opening including Bertsch Family Foundation, Blue Heron Asset Management, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Preston Gardner Brown, Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation, CE Group, members of TLC’s Conservation Corps, Duke Energy Water Resources Fund, F. M. Kirby Foundation, Great Outdoor Provision Company, Pam and Brad Hemminger, J. Davis Architects, Johnson Subaru of Cary, Martin Marietta, McAdams Company, Murphy’s Naturals, Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), NC State Parks Recreational Trails Program, Shelli and Brad Stanback, Triangle Off-Road Cyclists (TORC), Wells Fargo Foundation, Wind Point Foundation, and hundreds of TLC members.
After the grand opening on Earth Day the preserve will be open daily from dawn to dusk for the public to enjoy.
About Triangle Land Conservancy
Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) is a nonprofit seeking to conserve the wild and working lands in the Triangle that make it a great place to live, work, and play. Since 1983, TLC has protected over 18,000 acres in 166 places.
Green space, farmland and clean water are integral to high quality of life which is a key reason that families, employers, employees, and retirees choose the Triangle as their home. The region will continue to develop as an estimated 1.3 million people move into our six-county service area within the next three decades. TLC is committed to working with individuals, businesses, and government partners to balance this growth with open space preservation for the long-term sustainability and health of our local communities. We are also dedicated to the stewardship of our conserved lands in perpetuity, forever protecting the public benefits they provide, including clean water, natural habitats, farms and food, and access to nature.
