What is your role at TLC? I have the joy and privilege of serving as assistant to our Executive Director, Sandy Sweitzer. My primary duties are managing her schedule, staff and board activities and meetings, and whatever else happens to need doing.
Favorite TLC Preserve: TBD! Still exploring TLC preserves.
Laura Smith first worked with TLC in 2006 as a contract writer creating donor profiles of four members for the Our Water, Our Land campaign. Ten years later, she interned with TLC’s Communications Managers Diana Hackenburg and then Chris Fowler. From 2008-2013 Laura worked for The NC Chapter of The Nature Conservancy in Durham as the liaison between the philanthropy and communications departments. While in that position she wrote and edited donor correspondence and grants; migrated, managed and wrote for the website; and supported members of the philanthropy, communications and government relations departments.
Laura was born in Michigan and moved to the Triangle area 20 years ago. She has been a lover of animals and the environment for as long as she can remember. Laura now considers NC and all of its natural wonders to be her home. She has traveled extensively both abroad and across the US and especially enjoys visiting national parks. Some of her favorites (so far!) are Sequoia, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Zion, Bryce Canyon and the Badlands of South Dakota.
Laura has a B.S. in Language, Writing and Rhetoric and a minor in Environmental Science from North Carolina State University. She serves as President and Manager of the North Carolina Transplant Athletes and volunteers for The Lung Transplant Foundation.
